I am fascinated by the explosion of shopping apps for the iPhone that use location based services. What does that mean? Well they use goth the cellular network and mall/in-store WiFi networks to track where you are and your location allows them to "push" targeted deals right to your phone.
Recently I have used the new RetailMeNot App, to see just how well these digital deal sites work.
All of this technology is moving into grocery retailers... Catalina Marketing developed and manages the Stop and Shop ScanIt App program. My article The Connected Consumer - The Connected Diner - Tracking you at the Store and at the Restaurant Table is a deep dive into smartphone shopping applications and restaurant tabletop ordering systems using the iPad as the technology base.
