Are 99 Cents Stores becoming Dollar Food Stores?

Dollar Food Stores a New Retail Format?

Dollar Food Stores a food trend for 2012? Yep!

Dollar Stores, such as Dollar General, are adding fresh foods in new formats, in their case it is Dollar General Markets. Bottom Dollar, owned by Delhaize, Delhaize is in the process of converting 64 Bloom and Bottom Dollar stores from Maryland to North Carolina to Food Lion supermarkets.  So the jury is still out on dollar food stores. But the rollout of  Walmart Express points to a different trend.

However, 99 Cents Only Stores® seems firmly committed to foods in their dollar store format. To get the word out, they invited First Lady, Michelle Obama, to attend the Grand Opening of its new store in San Diego, California to help her spread her healthy eating message. The event will take place tomorrow, Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the new store's location 2611 Market St.

99 Cents Only Stores' slogan is ... you don't have to be wealthy to eat healthy! They put their money where there mouth is since over 50% of  the Company's sales come from food and beverages, including produce, dairy, deli and frozen foods, along with organic and gourmet foods.

Small Format Retail Grocery is Growing

Walmart Express seems to be the leading edge in small format retail, with their 3,000 sq. ft. plus stores that focus primarily on foods. Take a peek at the first Walmart Express Store in Chicago to see how their leading edge is fresh produce.  Walgreens is forging ahead with their fresh foods format in selected part of the country. Even Bed Bath and Beyond has partnered with World Market is 3 beta test stores to sell food that has high synergies with their vast selection of kitchenware.
