British sandwich shop giant Pret A Manger will have a store within a store at the Chicago State Street CityTarget store.
What is CityTarget?
The small-format CityTarget stores are an attempt to expand the Target footprint into areas that can't support a full sized Target store. Since it is so new, they are still vetting out the merchandising mix and store footprint. This is a trend that is exemplified by the aggressive rollout of WalMart Express stores and to a lesser extent, Walmart Market. The first CityTarget will open in the newly restored Carson Pirie Scott building, now known as Sullivan Center.
What is Pret A Manger
Pret A Manger is a... well here is what they say on their site:
"Pret creates handmade, natural food, avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the 'prepared' and 'fast' food on the market today"
They are what may be called sandwich shops except that really does not do the brand justice. It is an interesting mix of fast food and fast casual pre-made sandwiches, soups, salads and baked goods. Everything is made on premise and pre-packaged for quick purchase and easy consumption.
Cause Related Branding
Doing good and doing well is the mantra of social enterprises. Both Target and Pret are very supportive of the communities they do business in. Target says they donate 5% of revenues or approximately $3 Million per week to social causes.
Tips for Food Entrepreneurs
Well, this CityTarget and Pret relationship is so new... the only "foodpreneur" tips is keep following CityTarget, Pret A Manger and WalMart Express. Things are changing quickly in the retail food and beverage sector.
